TERNET EMIS

Education Management Information System (EMIS)

Tthe current status concerning an Education Management Information System (EMIS) is somewhat complex. At the institutional level, almost all institutions use their own management information systems. There are a number of separate efforts both at the institutional level and national level. However, there is no central coordination in building these IS and this leads to incompatibility between systems - and higher costs per institution for implementation and maintenance.

There is an increasing requirement for an EMIS that can accommodate the requirements of different universities. For example students applying for more than one institution, students with more than one HEI affiliation and students' loan application from the Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB).

This type of requirement underlined the need for an EMIS that allows close integration between HEIs and a data management centre. It was further learnt that an EMIS that meets the requirements of large institutions, such as some of the old universities, is likely to meet or exceed the requirements of other institutions. The preference by TERNET members was, and still is, to make use of Open Source software systems
