TERNET Infrastructure

Tanzania Education and Research Network (TERNET) was registered with the explicit goal of connecting Tanzanian Educational and Research Institutions to form National Research and Education Networks (NREN).

The network will facilitate effective sharing of ICT resources in order to enhance efficiency of their use in Institutions and improve the quality of higher education and research in the country.

Tanzania is made up of 26 regions and TERNET members ’ institutions are unevenly spread all over the country, which creates the challenge of finding an optimal starting point for deploying the network.

To meet the challenge TERNET intends to deploy its infrastructure in phases, starting with the regions that have the largest number of member institutions and where, currently, fibre optic infrastructure exists.

Currently, TERNET is in the process of building its capacity, establishing needs, infrastructure requirements and operational models, in order to be able to sustainably manage the NREN. This initiative is supported by the HEIs and development partners.

There are currently more than 54 HEIs scattered in about 10 regions of the country, with 19 in Dar-es-salaam, 4 in Zanzibar and the rest in the eight regions, namely Dodoma, Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya, Tanga, Moshi, Arusha and Mwanza.
