Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) is a membership-based organization with a mission to facilitate collaboration among Uganda's research and education institutions for knowledge creation, sharing, and utilization. Just like TERNET in Tanzania, RENU fosters digital transformation among education and research institutions in Uganda through sharing of resources and knowledge and utilization. TERNET and RENU participated in similar roles on the Applied Curricula in Technology in East Africa (ACTEA) project. ACTEA project focused on the key areas of Automation, Energy, and Manufacturing Technology through the redesigning different curriculums to enable teaching to become more practical and relevant. TERNET and RENU's responsibilities on the project were to provide high-speed Internet connectivity, improve networks of respective country project partners, to develop, host, and maintain online resources to benefit partner institutions. Through this project, TERNET was able to have a glimpse of how RENU have been able to concur and achieve more in areas of leadership, visibility, relevance, quality of service and financial stability. In this context, TERNET saw the need to visit RENU offices in Kampala Uganda to learn and understand more how RENU operate and achieve what they have achieved
Through funding from the ACTEA project, TERNET team paid a visit to RENU from 26th September to 30th September 2022. The team was introduced to the RENU office environment, staff operations and provisioning of services. The team met with Jude Opolot and discussed on efficient governance and he pointed out important elements required for an organization to have business continuity and efficiency, depending on the level of organization
The team visited the technical departments and the NOC managed by the Networks and NOC Departments. The NOC is located at the offices and is accessed and monitored remotely by the authorized staff only. The team also attended RENU ICT Directors’ forum attended by directors and stakeholders from 50 institutions and organizations from within and outside the country. The forum highlighted the success stories and case studies of RENU achievements through partnerships and prospects. The team noted that the main highlight was how Eduroam in Uganda has scaled up and evolved from the original idea through RENU. The forum also presented the services provided i.e. CERT while also inviting other stakeholders like UbuntuNet to highlight achievements from various projects and services.
